Sebastián Montoya Formula 2 Mexico City race, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City, Mexico): Colombian-American Formula 2 driver Sebastián Montoya has described the possibility of racing next year at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, almost simultaneously with the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix, as “irresistible,” according to an interview with EFE.
The Formula 1 and Formula 2 events are scheduled to take place in the Mexican capital from October 29 to 31, 2027. Montoya, the son of Colombian racing legend Juan Pablo Montoya, said he had driven a few laps at the track over the weekend and found it “incredible.”
“This weekend I did a few laps on the track in Mexico and it is incredible. It was enough to fill me with excitement, because next year it sounds irresistible to be here,” Montoya said.
He added that he hoped to race the circuit next year and promised Mexican fans “a great show” if he is there.
Montoya, who was born 21 years ago in Miami, is spending his final days with Prema Racing, the team that gave him his Formula 2 opportunity in 2025. He explained that Formula 2 is known for close competition and the aggressive style of young drivers seeking to impress teams in the top category, noting that some fans consider F2 races more entertaining than those of F1.
He cited several current Formula 1 drivers who previously competed in Formula 2, including Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Alexander Albon, Lando Norris, George Russell and Franco Colapinto. He also highlighted Latin American drivers in the series, including Brazilian Rafael Câmara, who leads the championship with Invicta Racing, and fellow Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi Júnior.
Two Mexican drivers, Noel León of Campos Racing and Rafael Villagómez of Van Amersfoort Racing, are also on the grid, along with Paraguayan Joshua Duerksen and Argentine Nico Varrone.
“All Latin Americans have to help each other,” he emphasized. Montoya said this has been a difficult season due to problems within his team, which he described as frustrating, but added that he aims to show he can compete with the leading drivers and be considered for Formula 1.
The next Formula 2 event is the Qatar Grand Prix at the Lusail International Circuit, scheduled for November 27 to 29. Formula 2 recently marked 10 years since its inaugural 2017 season, which followed an agreement between the FIA and GP2 Series to rename the category.
The Mexican Grand Prix has been held continuously since 2015, and the addition of a Formula 2 round reflects that growth.
Bruno Michel, CEO of FIA Formula 2, said at the announcement of the Mexico date: “Coming to Mexico was a logical step. It is a great adventure for the Mexican Grand Prix and for Formula 2.
Formula 2 extends the calendar to new places, places with new fans and fantastic atmospheres; all of that is here.”
Since its first season in 2017, 22 Formula 2 drivers have moved up to Formula 1 through the 2026 season, according to the report, with the category accounting for 33 Formula 1 Grand Prix wins and 150 podiums. Formula 2 reportedly has more than 60 million viewers worldwide across more than 170 countries and about 3.5 million social media followers.
