Pope Leo XIV visit to the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico, Digi Mart USA News: Pope Leo XIV will visit Mexico to see the Basilica of Guadalupe, although no confirmed date or itinerary for his arrival in the country has yet been announced. María Montserrat Alvarado, the new prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, made the statement on Tuesday.

“The Holy Father will indeed go to see Our Lady of Guadalupe,” the Mexican official said during the presentation of the tour the pontiff will make through Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, 2026. When asked when the trip could take place, Alvarado said the announcement would be made when the time is right.

For now, the visit is not included in the Vatican’s official schedule for this year. A possible arrival in Mexico in 2027 therefore remains an expectation rather than a confirmed date.

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See, also mentioned the possibility that the pontiff could arrive in Mexico. He said Leo XIV plans to travel to the United States and could use that trip to make a stop in Mexico.

The Pope’s interest in visiting the Basilica of Guadalupe had been expressed previously. However, Mexico is not part of the South American tour announced for November, which includes only Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.

President Claudia Sheinbaum extended an official invitation to Leo XIV to visit the country during a phone conversation on December 12, 2025, in the framework of the celebrations for the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The president said both discussed the meaning of the Virgin as a symbol of identity and peace for Mexicans, regardless of their religious beliefs.

The invitation had also been delivered earlier, on May 18, 2025, during the ceremony marking the start of the current leader of the Catholic Church’s papacy.

Although the visit to Mexico has been confirmed by the Vatican representative, the Holy See has yet to announce the date and details of the trip Leo XIV will make to the country.
