Mexico respects U.S. midterm election results, Sheinbaum says, Digi Mart USA News: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government will respect any result of the United States midterm elections. She avoided predicting how a possible change in control of the U.S.
Congress could affect Mexico, particularly trade relations and the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
Speaking at the Mañanera del Pueblo press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum was asked about the possibility that the Democratic Party could regain control of the U.S. legislative chambers and what that scenario could mean for the bilateral agenda.
“It is not our place to comment today. We will wait for the result and we will respect whatever the result of the election is,” she responded.
Sheinbaum made clear that the federal government will not take an advance position on the political makeup of the U.S. Congress and said Mexico will continue with its own priorities regardless of the electoral outcome.
“We continue on our path,” she said.
The president said it was necessary to wait until the electoral process concluded before offering views on its results, and she gave no specific assessment of possible changes to the economic relationship between the two countries. The statement comes amid the review of the USMCA scheduled for 2026, a process significant for Mexico’s trade relations with its main North American partners.
In a related matter, Sheinbaum was asked about reports pointing to the alleged detention of seven Mexicans accused of voting in the United States without U.S. citizenship.
The president said she was unaware of those claims and did not confirm that any detentions had taken place.
Finally, she indicated that information about the case could be provided, although during the conference she presented no official figures or details about the alleged detentions.
