Mexico Should Not Assume Democratic Congressional Win Will Resolve Tariffs and USMCA Challenges, Concanaco Warns

Mexico USMCA review and Democratic congressional win: Mexico Should Not Assume Democratic Congressional Win Will Resolve Tariffs and USMCA Challenges: Concanaco urges preparation, a clear national agenda, and stronger dialogue with U.S. lawmakers and business groups ahead of the USMCA review.

Mexico Should Not Assume Democratic Congressional Win Will Resolve Tariffs and USMCA Challenges, Digi Mart USA News: Mexico should not assume that the Democratic victory in both chambers of the U.S. Congress will automatically resolve tariffs or the challenges it will face during the review of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur) warned.

Following preliminary results of elections held on Tuesday, the business organization said the new political landscape in the United States should be evaluated responsibly, through technical preparation, clear objectives and a strategy that allows Mexico to defend its interests in the bilateral economic relationship. It proposed strengthening dialogue with Democratic and Republican lawmakers, authorities, business chambers and regional actors in the United States who share interests in trade, employment and investment certainty.

Octavio de la Torre, the organization’s president, said Mexico needs to maintain its own agenda at the negotiating tables, identify the needs of the counterpart and build agreements that generate verifiable benefits for the national economy. “A political opportunity becomes an economic opportunity when there is preparation to seize it,” he said.

As part of that agenda, the Confederation proposed promoting greater participation of domestic suppliers in value chains, facilitating trade and tourism, expanding opportunities for professionals and cross-border services, and developing tools so that micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) can access the regional market. De la Torre warned that the interests of transnational companies operating in Mexico should not replace the needs of the country as a whole, and called for giving family businesses a voice in setting economic priorities and ensuring they also have access to the benefits of trade integration.

To advance these goals, Concanaco said dialogue with the United States should recognize the shared costs created by uncertainty and the concrete benefits of maintaining a stable economic relationship, in order to identify areas of agreement, anticipate differences and negotiate more effectively. The organization expressed confidence that coordination with the Government of Mexico will improve and remain permanent, noting that under the Law of Business Chambers and their Confederations it has been a body of mandatory consultation for the government since 1917.

To support its role in this dialogue, the Confederation highlighted its territorial presence, its two million direct members, and the technical information and follow-up on concrete commitments it holds. “Our responsibility is to turn dialogue into agreements and agreements into opportunities for investment, employment and growth for Mexican families,” concluded Concanaco’s president.
