Giant rock threatens Paseo de los Ahuehuetes Sur, Digi Mart USA News (Miguel Hidalgo, Mexico City): A giant stone of volcanic origin, located on an elevated area of Bosques de las Lomas, has residents and authorities on alert over the possibility that it could break loose and fall onto Paseo de los Ahuehuetes Sur in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City (CDMX).
The rock formation sits at a point from which a drop of more than 10 meters could reach the roadway or affect a nearby property. Deterioration of the terrain that supports it has raised concerns about a possible landslide.
Miguel Hidalgo mayor Mauricio Tabe publicly said that recent rainfall has contributed to the deterioration of the embankment where the rock formation is lodged. He said this condition could compromise the stability of the stone and make it more likely to move downslope.
Following reports of the danger, authorities are conducting an inspection to determine the condition of the area and what actions are needed to prevent damage. The borough is awaiting the Mexico City government to address the report because the site is a protected natural area, while borough authorities continue to evaluate the situation.
