The Jalisco Secretariat of Public Security identified him as Jorge Abel Hurtado, now 50 years old, who escaped from a California prison where he was serving a sentence for drug trafficking.
According to the Jalisco security agency, authorities detected that after his escape in 2000 he took refuge in Tijuana and Mexicali, Baja California, before spending the past 10 years in Jalisco. The agency said the target was located through intelligence work, monitoring and intercommunication with United States authorities.
A search operation was then launched at locations where he was believed to frequent, involving the cyber police, the drone unit and the Strategic Operations Force for Citizen Protection (FOEP), the agency said.
“George Hurtado” was finally detained near López Mateos Avenue, close to the intersection with Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana, in the Provenza residential development of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga. After verifying his identity, authorities confirmed he had an immigration control request issued by the United States Marshals Service.
The detainee was taken to facilities of the National Migration Institute (INM), and the process to transfer him to the United States from Guadalajara International Airport was begun.
