UK salary disclosure requirement in job advertisements, Digi Mart USA News (United Kingdom): The British government plans to require employers to state salaries in job advertisements. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Thursday that the measure is part of efforts to reduce the number of young people who are neither working nor in school, training or education.

“Whether you are starting your working life as a young person or want to support your family as a parent, you should know what a job pays before you invest time and effort in an application,” Burnham said in a statement. The government said it will soon present a corresponding draft bill to Parliament, but his office did not provide a timeline.

According to the government, the requirement would help young people apply for their first job. It would also increase pay transparency and counter inequalities that could disadvantage women.

Citing estimates from the British professional association CIPD, Burnham’s office said that somewhat more than two in five employers always state a salary range. Fewer than one in five always name a specific salary.

In the United Kingdom, nearly one million young people aged 16 to 24 are neither working nor enrolled in school, university or training. That amounts to 13 percent of this age group, one of the highest shares in Europe.

Economists have called for mandatory salary disclosure in job postings.

In the European Union, the Pay Transparency Directive 2023/970 requires employers to disclose the starting salary or a salary range before a job interview. The directive has not yet been transposed into German law, and a corresponding law may follow in early 2027.

Germany has traditionally had little transparency about wages and salaries.
