Social Security payments, USA News (Washington, D.C.): A new round of Social Security payments is scheduled to land in beneficiaries’ accounts this week, with some recipients eligible for as much as $5,181. The Social Security Administration’s 2026 payment calendar shows that benefits will be issued on Tuesday, November 3 to people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997. People who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will also get their Social Security payments on Tuesday.
People receiving both benefits are generally paid their SSI on the first day of the month and Social Security on the third. However, because November 1 fell on a Sunday this year, November’s SSI payment was issued early on Friday, October 30. The Social Security part remains scheduled for November 3. Most recipients who began collecting Social Security in May 1997 or later are paid according to their date of birth under the agency’s staggered payment system.
Maximum Benefit Amounts and Calculation Factors
The maximum monthly Social Security retirement benefit in 2026 is $5,181, but few beneficiaries will actually get that amount. The maximum applies to someone who starts receiving benefits at age 70 in 2026 and has been a consistently high earner, earning at least Social Security’s taxable maximum every year since age 22. For comparison, a worker retiring in 2026 after consistently earning the taxable maximum could receive up to $4,152 per month at full retirement age. The maximum for someone claiming at age 62 is $2,969.
The exact amount a person receives depends primarily on their lifetime earnings and the age at which they start claiming benefits. The SSA calculates a worker’s basic retirement benefit using their highest 35 years of wage-indexed earnings. Years without earnings may be counted as zero if the worker has fewer than 35 years in their record, potentially reducing the end payment. Benefits can generally be claimed from age 62, but claiming before full retirement age results in a reduced monthly amount. Delaying beyond full retirement age increases the monthly benefit until age 70.
Averages and Upcoming 2027 COLA Changes
The agency estimated that the average monthly benefit for a retired worker reached approximately $2,071 in January 2026, following this year’s 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment. The estimated average for all disabled workers was $1,630.
A new 3.6 percent cost-of-living adjustment increase will affect payments in 2027, the SSA announced on October 14. Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the increase beginning with their January 2027 payments. The agency estimates that the average retirement benefit will rise by about $75 per month. The increase technically applies to December 2026 Social Security benefits, which are paid in January 2027. SSI recipients will see their higher payment first, on December 31, 2026 because January 1 is a federal holiday. The adjustment is automatic, meaning beneficiaries don’t need to apply for it or pay anyone to activate it. Personalized notices showing recipients’ new payment amounts will be available through their my Social Security accounts beginning in late November, while paper notices will be mailed in December.
