India Air Force IL-76MD high-altitude landing at Nyoma near China border, Digi Mart USA News (Ladakh, northern India): The Indian Air Force said on Saturday that it had landed a heavy transport aircraft in very high mountain terrain in the isolated Ladakh region of northern India, near the border with China.
The Ilyushin IL-76MD, a four-engine, twin-spool military transport aircraft of Russian origin also known as Ganjraj, landed at an airfield located 4,154 meters above sea level, according to the same source. The air force said in a statement that the landing at Nyoma set a record for the highest landing ever made by this aircraft worldwide.
The Indian Air Force described the achievement as a milestone that strengthens India’s strategic transport capabilities and a new step in the history of aviation. Images published by the air force on social media show the aircraft landing and taking off from a runway surrounded by arid mountains in the cold desert region, where temperatures can drop to -20°C.
The Nyoma military airfield was completed last year as part of an effort to strengthen military infrastructure in the region. The effort followed a 2020 India-China border clash that killed 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers.
India and China are engaged in intense competition for influence in South Asia. Relations have gradually improved since the 2020 clash, with political contacts resumed at the highest level.
However, unresolved territorial disputes have left deep mistrust, and both countries maintain military deployments along their roughly 3,500-kilometer shared border in high-altitude terrain.
According to the report, the aircraft’s ability to carry heavy military equipment could strengthen India’s rapid deployment capabilities and strategic posture in high-altitude terrain.
