At the end of October 2026, Philippine authorities confirmed that Thomas Markle was the subject of an investigation for possession of child sexual abuse images. They also said they had found such images at a former residence of Thomas Markle.
Philippine police later told AFP that they had inspected three memory cards and a mobile phone belonging to the 82-year-old man, which contained images of sexual assaults on minors.
On Friday, November 6, 2026, a separate investigation in the United States, where Thomas Markle has been staying for several months, accelerated. Authorities had been alerted several weeks earlier that child abuse images were stored in a storage unit in Mexico that Thomas Markle had rented and for which he had stopped paying rent in 2024.
Authorities searched the unit and seized computer equipment, among other items.
According to The Daily Mail, FBI agents arrested Thomas Markle at his retirement home in Florida on Friday for possession of child sexual abuse material. The 82-year-old, who has used a wheelchair since one of his legs was amputated last year, was taken away in handcuffs shortly after 9 a.m.
When the case first emerged, Meghan Markle said she was “deeply upset” by the accusations against her father, whom she has not seen in nearly 10 years. The Duchess of Sussex also said in a statement that she had been aware since 2018 of “troubling and disturbing allegations” concerning Thomas Markle.
London police later confirmed that Meghan Markle had “received a letter containing a number of allegations in January 2019.” In her statement, the Duchess of Sussex said she hoped it would now be understood that her decision not to allow him contact with their children was made for one reason only: to protect them. Thomas Markle has repeatedly maintained that the accusations are false.
He will now have to answer questions from the FBI.
