The operation seeks to strengthen the air capabilities of Mexico’s Armed Forces.
The approval was issued by the U.S. Department of State and includes, in addition to the aircraft, 27 engines, navigation systems, communication radios, night vision equipment, radars, rescue devices and armament.
The package also includes training for Mexican personnel, technical assistance and logistical support for the operation and maintenance of the helicopters.
According to information released by the U.S. government, the goal is to modernize Mexico’s air fleet and strengthen its capabilities to carry out operations against drug trafficking, while expanding military and security cooperation between the two countries.
Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, would be the main contractor for the project. U.S.
personnel are also expected to travel to Mexico to help install the equipment, conduct tests and train operators.
The authorization does not mean that Mexico has already purchased the helicopters. It is the approval of a possible commercial transaction and therefore does not yet represent the completion of the acquisition.
