Netflix Miniseries Obsession Richard Armitage, Digi Mart USA News: Looking for a next binge over the weekend? A look at Netflix’s most successful miniseries, which can be watched in a single day or even one evening, is worthwhile.
One such title is the thriller Obsession, starring Richard Armitage, known from The Hobbit. Note that it is not a Harlan Coben adaptation, although Armitage has already starred in several of those for Netflix.
Obsession is based on a novel, is self-contained and runs only four episodes. Since its launch in April 2023, the miniseries has accumulated a total of 52.7 million views, according to What’s on Netflix.
That places it among Netflix’s most successful miniseries since 2023.
The title is not especially imaginative, and the source material is no more creative. Josephine Hart’s novel appeared in 1981 under the original title Damage and later in Germany as Verhängnis.
Under that title, the first film adaptation, Louis Malle’s Verhängnis starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche, also reached German cinemas in 1992. Just over thirty years later, Netflix released its adaptation of Hart’s work.
The erotic thriller centers on a risky web of relationships. When renowned surgeon Dr.
William Farrow (Armitage) meets the mysterious Anna Barton (Charlie Murphy), his world is thrown off balance. Anna is the future wife of his son Jay (Rish Shah), which complicates the situation considerably.
Nevertheless, Anna and her future father-in-law feel an immediate attraction, and a passionate affair begins.
The four-episode thriller has not been well received by the Moviepilot community, which gives it an average rating of only 4.9 out of 10. By comparison, the first film adaptation directed by Malle, who also made Elevator to the Gallows, fares better, earning a solid 6.6 points.
Unfortunately, that version is not currently available on any streaming service.
