Tlaxcala driver’s license requirements and procedures 2026, Digi Mart USA News (Tlaxcala, Mexico): The Tlaxcala Secretariat of Mobility and Transport (SMyT) has simplified the requirements for obtaining or renewing a driver’s license, a procedure that is now also available to people from other states in Mexico. The process includes several license categories, theoretical assessments, and driving simulator tests.
The measure is intended to make it easier to issue the document for first-time applicants as well as for drivers who need to exchange a previous license. Interested persons can also begin part of the procedure online, where they must select the type of permit and schedule the corresponding assessments.
The documents required depend on the license category and on whether the application is for a new license or a renewal. For types B, C, D and E, first-time applicants must present their INE identification in original and copy, pass the theoretical exam on road rules, and complete and pass the driving simulator test.
For an exchange, only the official identification and the previous license are required.
Requirements for categories A and F are different. For a new license, applicants must present a certificate from a road culture training course, pass a driving simulator evaluation, provide INE identification in original and copy, and take a five-element toxicology test performed at a public or private laboratory.
An exchange also requires the previous license, the course certificate, the toxicology test and official identification.
Applicants should first identify the category that matches their activity: type A for public transport, type B for automobiles and light trucks up to 3.5 tons, type C for private automobiles, type D for motorcycles, and type F for cargo transport. The SMyT has enabled a digital platform for pre-registering theoretical and practical assessments.
Users enter the official Tlaxcala website, select the license type, pass the theory exam, choose a date and time for the driving test, attend with a QR code for the simulator exam, and check results on the platform.
Fees depend on the category and validity period. A motorcyclist license costs 293 pesos and is valid for two years; an automobile license costs 528 pesos, valid for two years; public transport costs 997 pesos, valid for two years; emergency vehicles and commercial licenses cost 1,114 pesos each, valid for two years; a private driver license costs 1,818 pesos, valid for five years; and a minor’s permit costs 2,405 pesos, valid for two years.
Payments can be made in cash at the counter, by bank transfer, or online. Fees include use of the simulator and issuance of the document.
In-person applications are handled at the Central Offices of the Secretariat of Mobility and Transport, located at Calle Hidalgo 17, Colonia Centro, San Pablo Apetatitlán. Service hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. There is no service on weekends or holidays.
