Sebastian Hoeneß Manchester United interest, Digi Mart USA News: Sebastian Hoeneß, head coach of VfB Stuttgart, is reportedly near the top of Manchester United’s list of “shadow managers,” according to The Independent.

The British outlet reports that Hoeneß is highly regarded by decision-makers at Old Trafford, who are looking for alternatives to their wobbling current head coach, Michael Carrick. The Independent also notes that Hoeneß would only be available for a significant financial outlay, as he is under contract at Stuttgart until 2028, meaning United would likely have to pay a potentially hefty transfer fee.

Hoeneß, 44, took over Stuttgart in spring 2023 during a relegation battle and is currently leading the club to a second consecutive Champions League campaign. He has frequently been linked with top European clubs, and reports earlier this year suggested Real Madrid had looked at him.

He reportedly responded to those speculations by saying, “That doesn’t move me so much.”

Carrick took over United earlier this year from the recently dismissed Ruben Amorim and initially enjoyed success, leading the Red Devils into the Champions League. This season, however, the club has struggled, and Carrick’s position is reportedly under growing pressure.

United’s 3-2 Champions League win over Roma this week was reported to have come after a dramatic comeback, but the outcome has not yet secured his future.

According to The Independent, United’s leadership remains uncertain about suitable and available successors. Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly not as highly regarded internally as previously thought, and there are reportedly doubts about former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Fabian Hürzeler, currently successful with Brighton & Hove Albion, is also mentioned, though his likely high transfer fee could pose a problem.

United next face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. After nine matchdays, the club sits 17th in the table, just above the relegation zone, and a strong league result would be needed to ease pressure on Carrick.
