Essen police officer Dienstwagen crash suspected alcohol, Digi Mart USA News (Essen, Germany): An unusual accident is drawing attention to the Essen police department. A police officer crashed his service vehicle.

According to the report, a Volkswagen Bulli lay on its side on the B227 in Essen, with its rear hatch open and traffic cones and vests scattered around it. The driver had lost control of the vehicle shortly before, and it came to rest on its side.

The driver was slightly injured in the accident on Thursday evening, and no other vehicles were involved. The driver is a police officer operating a service vehicle of the North Rhine-Westphalia state police.

The Essen police themselves reported on Friday morning that the officer may have been under the influence of alcohol. A blood sample was taken from the officer, Essen police spokesperson Hendrik Heyer told WDR, and results are expected to take several days.

So far, only the suspicion exists.

The police operation at the scene lasted into the early morning hours, and the B227 toward Essen city center was closed until then. The officer was taken to a hospital and was not on duty at the time of the accident.

For neutrality reasons, police departments not involved in the officer’s own unit are generally required to handle investigations in such cases. The Bochum police are taking over the investigation in this case.
