Centre Party press conference on new initiative after Sweden Democrats’ government statement, Digi Mart USA News: Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist has called a press conference “in connection with a new initiative from the party’s parliamentary group and party board.”

The press conference is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. today, Friday, a few hours after the Sweden Democrats announced they are ready to drop their demand for ministerial posts and still allow Ulf Kristersson to become prime minister.

The announcement could open the way for the Centre Party to switch sides and form a center-right government with the Moderates, the Liberals and the Christian Democrats. Political science professor Tommy Möller told TT that it is difficult to judge how likely or unlikely such a scenario is, but said the announcement increases pressure on the Social Democrats to get the Left Party to drop its demand for ministerial posts.

“If the Green Party abandons its demand for ministerial posts, such a retreat would be made easier. A pure Social Democratic government is the only way for the Centre Party to avoid a betrayal debate,” he said.
