Wolf pack births in the Catalan Pyrenees along the France-Spain border, Digi Mart USA News (Catalonia, Spain): Rural agents in Catalonia confirmed on Wednesday the birth of five wolf pups. According to information provided by the Generalitat, the Catalan regional government, a pair recently had a litter of five pups.
It is the same pair that had already produced three cubs in 2025, the first births in more than 100 years in the territory. The wolf has been confirmed continuously in Catalonia since 2000.
The original specimens are believed to have come from France and contributed to the natural expansion of the Italian population, which colonized the French Alps in 1992. The territory of the “Catalan” pair extends from the Alt Empordà to the Alta Garrotxa.
The pack is now believed to consist of nine individuals: the parent pair, two young born last year (one male and one female), and the five pups from the latest litter. A third young wolf born last year has not been seen with its companions for several days, and authorities believe it may have begun dispersing.
The wolf is threatened with extinction, and these births confirm progress in the reintroduction of the species in Catalonia, where it is also present in the center of the region and around Girona. However, the large predator also poses a threat to livestock in the region.
The government has announced that it is working on new measures to support and protect farms affected by possible attacks, aiming to strengthen prevention and speed up compensation, according to the Catalan outlet 324.cat.
The Generalitat is finalizing a recovery plan with all stakeholders through several working sessions held within the Taula del Llop, the wolf roundtable, a consultation and dialogue body on the management of the species.
