Sweden temporary internal border controls, Digi Mart USA News: The Swedish government has decided to introduce internal border controls for a period of six months. The reason given is serious threats to public order and internal security.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (Moderaterna) told Expressen that the threats include an increased risk of sabotage against Sweden and other member states. Internal border controls mean that a Schengen country introduces checks at borders with other Schengen countries, even though those borders are normally open.

Sweden could therefore check people traveling in from Norway, Denmark and other Schengen countries.

According to Expressen, Sweden has had occasional internal border controls since 2015. Strömmer said that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and its ongoing aggression there have placed Sweden in a serious security situation.

He also referred to recent information from the Swedish Security Service about increased sabotage threats against Sweden and other EU member states.

The justice minister said the border controls will give the police and customs authorities more tools to identify and act against potential threats and dangerous individuals entering the country.
