Scottish Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, Digi Mart USA News (Scotland): Social Security Scotland will begin issuing Pension Age Winter Heating Payments worth up to £316.70 this month to help older people with their energy bills. The annual payment, which has replaced the Winter Fuel Payment in Scotland, provides financial support worth between £105.55 and £316.70 depending on a person’s age, household circumstances and benefits.
The Scottish Government has estimated that around 879,000 pensioners will benefit from the support this winter, with more than one million payments expected to be issued. Payments will begin in November and continue throughout the winter, with most eligible pensioners receiving the money automatically without needing to apply.
Social Security Scotland has confirmed that letters notifying people about their payments will also start arriving this month.
The money will be deposited into the same bank account used for State Pension payments or benefits administered by Social Security Scotland. According to the latest guidance on MYGOV.SCOT, the amount someone receives depends on their circumstances during the qualifying week of September 21 to 27, 2026.
The amount depends on age and household circumstances: £211.15 for single pensioners aged between 66 and 79; £316.70 for single pensioners aged 80 or over; £105.55 each for pensioner couples aged between 66 and 79; £158.35 each for pensioner couples aged 80 or over; and £105.55 for eligible pensioners living in residential care.
The Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is available to eligible pensioners regardless of income, but those earning more than £35,000 a year will have their payment recovered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The £35,000 threshold applies to individual income rather than combined household income.
HMRC will recover the money through the tax system, either by adjusting tax codes for 2027/28 or including the amount in a person’s 2026/27 Self Assessment tax return. The Scottish Government estimated that around 180,000 payments will be recovered from higher-income pensioners this winter.
Most eligible pensioners do not need to take any action because Social Security Scotland will issue payments automatically. However, a small number of people may need to submit an application, depending on their circumstances.
People can check their entitlement, payment amount and whether they need to apply using the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment guidance on MYGOV.SCOT.
The Scottish Government has also confirmed that Winter Heating Payments worth £62 for eligible low-income households will begin in December. This is separate from the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment and provides additional support to people receiving certain qualifying benefits.
There is no single payment date for Winter Heating Payment. Social Security Scotland said eligible people will automatically receive the single payment from December and throughout the winter.
The payment does not depend on the temperature where someone lives, meaning eligible households receive the same amount whether or not their area experiences a prolonged period of freezing weather. The qualifying period for this year’s payment started on November 2 and will run until November 8.
