Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit to Basilica of Guadalupe, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): The Vatican has officially confirmed an upcoming visit by Pope Leo XIV to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City, generating strong international anticipation. The announcement was made during the formal presentation of the pontiff’s apostolic agenda, an event also marked by a restructuring of the Holy See’s communications leadership.

The confirmation was delivered by María Montserrat Alvarado, who took over as head of the Holy See’s Dicastery for Communication on November 1. Alvarado, the first lay woman to lead this ministry in its nearly 40 years, said she will make the official announcement about the exact date of the trip to Mexico once it is scheduled.

Reports suggest the visit could take place in summer 2027, although church authorities have yet to confirm a date.

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States, had previously said the trip to Mexico would be part of a future tour of the United States. Although the agenda is not yet fully defined, Vatican diplomatic authorities consider 2027 a feasible horizon for this stop.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni announced an immediate 12-day journey covering Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Lima, among other South American locations. During the trip of 14 stops, Leo XIV is scheduled to hold official meetings with Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, Argentine President Javier Milei and Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori.

The South American tour is his seventh international trip in a year and a half as pontiff. The only notable change has been the cancellation of a visit to the sanctuary of Saint Francis of Assisi at the end of October.

The Peruvian leg carries personal significance, as Francis Robert Prevost holds Peruvian citizenship after years living in the country and serving as bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo. The Peruvian itinerary also includes public activities and official meetings in Lima, Cusco and Pucallpa.

Regarding the health of the 71-year-old pontiff, Bruni said the October 13 surgery to remove an adenocarcinoma in the right lung was completed without complications. Postoperative analyses showed the lesion was localized, so no further oncological treatment or special medical precautions are required during the tour.

The pope was discharged on October 17 and has gradually resumed his activities, keeping the trip scheduled to begin November 6 from Rome.

The central message of the tour is expected to promote unity, Christian witness and personal commitment within local communities, while the Latino community in Mexico is reported to be enthusiastic about welcoming the Holy Father.
