ICE screening returning travelers at Eagle Pass bridges 1 and 2, Digi Mart USA News (Eagle Pass, Texas): Officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are not permanently stationed at the facilities of both international bridges, according to the publisher’s report.
During their interventions, however, they review the status of people returning from the United States to determine the reason they came to the country, how long they stayed, and what type of immigration document they used.
According to testimonies cited in the report, travelers arriving at the inspection point, where they remain alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel, have sometimes been approached and questioned about their stay in the country.
Officers seek to confirm that the person does not have a criminal record that could lead to a search, and that the immigration document used to enter the United States is appropriate and used accordingly.
The report also states that families who self-deport while carrying household furniture have been stopped and questioned about their decision to return to Mexico and whether they left any pending criminal matter on U.S. soil.
As of the publisher’s report, no arrests have been documented since the presence of these federal agents was first noticed, and no acts that could be considered abuses of authority have been recorded, unlike those reported in other parts of the United States.
