state pensioners, USA News (Birmingham, UK): State pensioners could access 11 freebies and discounts worth £13,767 in November. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) state pension is rising next April under the Labour Party government’s commitment to the triple lock. How much the new state pension goes up by is determined by the triple lock, which promises that it will be the highest of inflation, wage growth or 2.5%. This year, the highest of the three has been wage growth, which for the relevant month was 3.9%. As a result, from April 2027 the full state pension will be worth £13,036 a year.

This year, the full new state pension was just under that figure, at £12,547. But at a time where the cost of living crisis is running wild, there is a way to maximise your payments by bagging as many freebies and discounts as you’re entitled to. Among them are the following nine, which could be worth thousands to claimants and recipients.

Pension Credit and Housing Support

Pension Credit serves as the cornerstone benefit, now valued at an average of £4,300 yearly following a 4.8 per cent increase in April, according to the DWP. The payment tops up weekly income to £238 for single claimants or £363.25 for couples, but its true value lies in unlocking additional support. Sarah Pennells, consumer finance specialist at Royal London, noted that Pension Credit acts as a gateway benefit for housing costs and other aid. Housing-related support represents a significant portion of the available assistance, including maximum Housing Benefit from local authorities worth around £1,000 annually. Council Tax reductions offer further savings, varying by local authority from approximately £300 for a quarter reduction on a standard Band D property to complete exemption worth up to £1,600.

Additional Perks and NHS Benefits

Free TV licences are available for Pension Credit claimants who are aged 75 or over, saving £180. Royal Mail offers Pension Credit claimants a reduced rate of £62 for the 12-month redirection service rather than the standard £87 fee. NHS-related benefits provide substantial additional value for those receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, including free NHS prescriptions in England for those aged 60 or over, where a standard prescription costs £9.90 per item. Free dental check-ups are also accessible, alongside eye care assistance featuring vouchers towards spectacles or contact lenses worth up to £215 depending on prescription requirements.

Attendance Allowance and Energy Support

Attendance Allowance offers additional support for pensioners with disabilities requiring personal care, paying £76.90 weekly at the lower rate or £114.60 at the higher rate since April, delivering up to £5,959.20 annually across roughly 56 condition categories. Energy support schemes include the Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300, which is sent to everyone over state pension age although reclaimed by HMRC through the tax system for those earning over £35,000. Additionally, the Warm Home Discount provides £150 off electricity bills for individuals on Pension Credit or a low income.
