Santa Isabel de Hungría smallest church in the world, Colomares, Spain, Digi Mart USA News (Benalmádena, Málaga province, Andalusia, Spain): Wondering where the smallest church in the world is located? According to Guinness World Records, which has recognized it since 1990, the building is Santa Isabel de Hungría in Spain.

It sits inside the Colomares castle, a landmark architectural site in the province of Málaga, in the heart of Andalusia.

The castle is dedicated to Christopher Columbus and is located in Benalmádena, in Málaga province. The church is irregular in shape and covers a total area of just 1.96 square meters.

The tourism website Visita Costa del Sol notes that visitors feel like giants in the kingdom of the Lilliputians inside the building.

The website also says that it is logically quite difficult to celebrate Mass there, since the priest can barely fit inside the church.

The church is dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, patron saint of the Teutonic Order, who devoted her life to helping the most destitute. According to legend, her brother-in-law discovered her giving bread to the poor without her family’s knowledge.

He pulled back the cloth covering her bread basket to see what was inside, and God protected Saint Elizabeth by turning the food into roses, the website recounts.

A statue of the saint can be seen in the small church of Colomares. The castle was built by Esteban Martín between 1987 and 1994 as a symbol of the discovery of America in 1492 and the blending of cultures.

Visitors can also see the silhouette of the Pinta, one of the explorer’s ships. The monument, according to the source, combines architectural styles found throughout Spanish history.
