Krakow shooting in Poland, Digi Mart USA News (Krakow, Poland): At least six people have died and more than a dozen have been wounded in a shooting that took place Sunday in the Polish city of Krakow, according to police.

The incident occurred at 3 p.m. local time, when a man in a vehicle began firing “at random” at people in the Main Market Square, one of the main attractions of this popular tourist destination in central Europe.

According to initial reports, the alleged attacker, a 25-year-old Pole who was wearing “military-style clothing” at the time and showed sympathy for “far-right ideologies,” was shot dead by officers who arrived at the scene after he resisted arrest.

“During the arrest, officers used their weapons and the man returned fire; as a result, two police officers are among the injured,” said a police statement.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński reported that one of the officers is in critical condition after being shot three times.

Authorities, who initially reported five deaths, later raised the toll to six: four women and two men.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he was “deeply concerned by the news of the tragic events” and that his thoughts are with the victims, the wounded and their families. “I am in contact with the competent authorities and expect a thorough explanation of the circumstances surrounding these tragic events,” Nawrocki wrote in a post on X.

He added that the head of the National Security Bureau was heading to Krakow.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that an investigation has been launched to clarify what happened.

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Tom Rose called the event a “savage and murderous attack” and offered his government’s full support.

“The United States stands in solidarity with Poland in these dark moments,” he wrote on X.

A tourist who was in the area at the time of the attack said she took refuge in a restaurant. “When I heard the shots, I ran into a restaurant and stayed there until everything went silent,” she told Reuters, identifying herself as Talli.

“I don’t know what to do now,” she added, saying she did not know the safest way to reach her hotel.

Emergency services have asked residents to avoid the Main Market Square, which remains cordoned off.

Krakow is one of Poland’s most important tourist destinations and is closely linked to Pope John Paul II, who served as archbishop of the city before being elected pontiff.
