Somos party opens 2027 candidacies to citizens and young people, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): The Somos party announced that it will allow people outside its structure to compete for candidacies ahead of the 2027 elections in Mexico. Among its proposals, the party plans to hold primary elections to choose its candidates, guarantee gender parity between women and men, and reserve spaces for young people.

The announcement was made during the event “Everest: Our Summit, Our Future.” Emilio Álvarez Icaza, Somos’s representative before the National Electoral Institute (INE), said citizens must stop being spectators of politics and participate directly in decisions, the selection of candidates and the defense of the vote.

Álvarez Icaza said the party seeks to bring in people who have so far remained on the sidelines of political parties and open spaces of popular representation for them. “We want a Mexico at peace and with joy, and that is why we are building Somos Mexico,” he said, adding that the project arises from citizens dissatisfied with injustice, violence and the deterioration of institutions.

Somos secretary general Cecilia Soto González called on participants to turn the citizen mobilizations held between 2022 and 2024 into a political force with legislative representation. She recalled that those demonstrations brought together millions of people in more than 100 cities in the country and abroad.

Soto González said the party must seek representation in the Congress of the Union to help form a constitutional majority that would, in her words, allow the recovery of institutions. She also accused the INE and the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) of being colonized, and called on supporters to vote for Somos “with joy and optimism” in June 2027.

Adina Chelminsky said the party seeks to turn social discontent into political participation through mechanisms that allow citizens to take part in internal decisions. Communications secretary Amado Avendaño Villafuerte said democratic participation should not be limited to going to the polls, but should include oversight of those in government and defense of electoral processes.

Youth secretary María José Gómez Mont said Somos Impacto will seek to bring young people into spaces of political decision-making. The party also plans to place issues such as disappearances, forced recruitment, unemployment and difficulties accessing housing on the agenda.

The meeting, organized by Somos member Eduardo Contró, also featured mountaineer Omar Álvarez, who shared his experience as a visually impaired person climbing Everest. The party reiterated that its strategy toward 2027 will center on citizen participation, the strengthening of its territorial structure and the incorporation of new voices into elected positions.
