Pope Leo XIV Our Lady of Guadalupe visit Uruguay not Mexico, Digi Mart USA News: The Vatican has clarified that Pope Leo XIV will visit a parish dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe in Casavalle, Uruguay, and not the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, as was initially interpreted after remarks by Montse Alvarado, the new prefect of the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See.
The clarification was made by Matteo Bruni, the Vatican spokesperson, after a press conference on the pope’s upcoming tour of Latin America mentioned a visit to Our Lady of Guadalupe, which raised expectations among Mexican faithful. According to Vatican journalist Valentina Alazraki, Alvarado’s remarks were misinterpreted because they referred to a church in Montevideo, Uruguay, not to the Marian shrine of Tepeyac.
The pope’s visit is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., at the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Casavalle, an area northeast of Montevideo. The meeting is part of Leo XIV’s pastoral activities during his tour of South America.
The confusion arose because the Uruguayan church shares the Guadalupe devotion with the basilica in the Gustavo A. Madero borough of Mexico City.
Although the Vatican clarified that there is no officially confirmed visit to Mexico, Alazraki said the pope maintains interest in traveling to the country and visiting the Basilica of Guadalupe. According to the correspondent, Vatican sources have indicated that Leo XIV wishes to visit the Mexican shrine, but no dates or program have been set so far.
The Holy See has therefore not announced a papal visit to Mexican territory, despite versions that circulated on Tuesday, November 3. The Vatican’s clarification ends the confusion over the pope’s Guadalupe-related destination during his upcoming tour, while the possibility of a future trip to Mexico remains open.
