David Piñera joins the Mexican Academy of the Language, Digi Mart USA News (Tijuana, Mexico): The Mexican Academy of the Language (AML) formally admitted historian David Piñera as a corresponding academic in Tijuana on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at a ceremony held at the academy’s facilities in Mexico City. Piñera is 91 years old.
The AML said his work has focused on the study, research and dissemination of the history of Baja California and the northwestern Mexican border region. The academy said his efforts have contributed to understanding the historical, social and cultural processes that shaped the identity of the region and to preserving its documentary and historical memory.
Piñera was first elected as a corresponding member in Tijuana on August 13, 2020, on the proposal of academics Diego Valadés, Ascensión Hernández Triviño and Patrick Johansson. The academy said his induction recognizes a career devoted to knowledge and dissemination of history and strengthens its presence in northern Mexico.
In an interview with ZETA, Piñera described his origins. He was born July 6, 1935, in Tepic, Nayarit, to Alfonso Piñera Gallardo and Elisa Ramírez Santana.
His family moved to Guadalajara around 1942, when he was about seven years old, and he lived there for 16 years.
Piñera initially studied law at the University of Guadalajara, graduating in 1958, but he said history held his interest from early on. While still a law student, he began teaching Universal History and Mexican History at the university’s preparatory school.
He credited lawyer Alberto Rosas Benítez with encouraging his interest, including a prize-winning paper in a national competition marking the centenary of the 1857 Constitution.
He moved to Mexicali on October 7, 1959, to practice law, joining his brother Samuel, who had already settled in Baja California. In September 1961 he began working at the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC), where he was appointed director of the Department of Cultural Diffusion at the invitation of the university’s first rector, Santos Silva Cota.
Piñera said his encounters with historian Miguel León-Portilla were decisive. He first met León-Portilla in California in 1969 and again in 1970 at a national meeting in La Paz on transculturation phenomena on the Mexico-United States border.
León-Portilla encouraged him to pursue graduate studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where Piñera earned a master’s and doctorate in history between 1971 and 1975.
Returning to Baja California, Piñera helped found the Center for Historical Research in Tijuana in 1975, a body linked to UNAM and UABC that later became the Institute of Historical Research. According to the academy and the interview, he also helped establish the UABC bachelor’s degree in history in 1986.
UABC named him Emeritus Researcher and Doctor Honoris Causa. In December 2022 he was named Emeritus Researcher of the National System of Researchers (SNI).
The academy said his formal induction on November 5, 2026, followed his 2020 election.
