GFCA Volley Coupe de France first-round exit against Narbonne, Digi Mart USA News (Ajaccio, Corsica, France): Ajaccio’s club faced a first-division opponent on Tuesday, November 3, in its Coupe de France debut. Battered over three sets and committing numerous technical errors, the club’s red devils bowed out of the competition and turned their focus to the Ligue B championship.
The first-round exit came on home court, with GFCA Volley eliminated before a thinly populated Palatinu arena of roughly 250 supporters. Despite the disappointment, the coach’s priority remains the championship and promotion to Alterna Volstar, the top tier of French volleyball.
Missing captain Florian Lacassie, who is injured for one month, the team relied on a strong performance from receiver-attacker Romain Capet, who scored nine points.
Coach Frédéric Ferrandez said there was no disappointment among the players or himself, reaffirming that the primary goal remains the championship and a return to the first division.
For reference, Gazélec won this competition twice, in 2016 and 2017. Last year, the club lost in the round of 16.
The next Ligue B championship match will be away on Saturday, November 7, against Saint-Jean-d’Illac.
