IRS tax collections, USA News: The Internal Revenue Service announced that it established records for both tax revenue collected and refunds distributed during fiscal year 2026. According to the agency, total tax collections reached a record-setting $5.6 trillion, representing an increase of nearly 5% compared to the previous year.
The agency also reported that the overall tax rate declined to 12.6%, marking a decrease of 4% from 2025 levels.
IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano attributed the historic refunds delivered to working families to tax cuts enacted under the Working Families Tax Cuts, which form part of President Donald J. Trump’s economic agenda. Bisignano credited the dedicated workforce for delivering a successful tax filing season and advancing the agency’s transformation into a digital-first operation designed to enhance the taxpayer experience, improve collections, and safeguard privacy.
The agency stated that the total volume of refunds claimed grew by 17% compared to the prior year, while the average refund amount increased by 11%.
Additionally, the agency noted a program announced in July, the Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) program, which automatically waives specific penalties on eligible tax returns. This new initiative replaces the traditional first time abate process that typically required taxpayers to submit direct requests for relief.
