Manuel Neuer record, Digi Mart USA News: Bayern Munich is known for records, and Manuel Neuer has set another one in the match against Mainz. However, a former HSV goalkeeper still holds a higher mark.
Manuel Neuer, at 40 years and 225 days, is now the oldest Bundesliga player for Bayern Munich. The Munich captain and former national goalkeeper surpassed former keeper Bernd Dreher (40 years and 198 days) with his appearance in the match at FSV Mainz 05, according to the data provider OptaFranz.
In league history, however, two goalkeepers still stand well ahead of Neuer. Former Hamburg player Ulrich Stein was between the posts at the age of 42 years and 170 days, and former Cologne keeper Toni Schumacher at 42 years and 73 days.
Born in Hamburg, Stein stood between the posts for HSV for many years in the 1980s. He celebrated his 72nd birthday in October.
Stein joined HSV from Arminia Bielefeld for the 1980/81 season. The 1.84-meter keeper played for the Hamburg club for seven years.
During that time HSV won the German championship twice, and in 1987 the club also celebrated the cup victory. The highlight came in 1983, when the Rothosen also prevailed in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup.
The competition now bears a different name and is better known as the Champions League.
Years later, Stein wore the Hamburg jersey again in the 1994/95 season. HSV still played in the top flight at that time, but no longer as successfully as in the decade before.
After this second spell in the north, the now 72-year-old, who caused some negative headlines during his career, moved back to Bielefeld and ended his professional career there in 1997. At the age of 42, Stein played his final match on April 11, 1997, against HSV.
