Guardian Blind Date: William and Abigail, Digi Mart USA News (London): William, 28, a PhD candidate, met Abigail, 24, a theatre artist, for dinner and drinks in a blind date featured in The Guardian’s Saturday dating column. William said he hoped for a spark of some kind.
He found Abigail glamorous and felt she suited the smart restaurant more than he did.
The pair talked about their shared love of Robert Pattinson, the play Abigail is working on and shucking oysters. William worried he had dominated the conversation because Abigail asked many questions.
Abigail also gave him a palm reading, which said he is not a good writer.
William said his most awkward moment came when he told Abigail he does not like theatre. In hindsight, he said he could see why a playwright and actor would be offended.
He described Abigail’s table manners as impeccable and said she was friendly and chatty with the staff.
William said the best thing about Abigail was her lovely smile and great sense of humour, adding that he laughed a lot. He said many of his friends are performers and would have plenty to talk about with her.
Abigail described William as polite and gentle, and said he was nervous in a sweet way. She said he worried about being underdressed but looked lovely.
They discussed standup comedy, socialism, academia and his disdain for contemporary British theatre, which she said she adores.
Abigail said William seemed keen to show off his American accent at points and that he knows his way around a wine list. She said he has lived a varied life of travel and extracurricular activities.
She would consider introducing him to her friends, though she said he admitted he loves lying to strangers.
Abigail described William as charming, roguish and amiable. She said she worried he might think she has a hand fetish after giving him a flirty palm reading.
She would have liked to steal his thick-rimmed emerald green glasses. She said his love line looked a bit unsteady, but he has her phone number if he would like to tempt fate.
The couple dined at Kobe in London W1.
