Danish households prioritize vacations over restaurant dining and other spending, Digi Mart USA News: Families with children appear especially willing to put holidays ahead of other expenses, according to a survey of Danish consumers.

The survey found that 48 percent of respondents are prepared to cut back on at least one major expense in order to afford a vacation. Among families with children, the figure rises to 66 percent, who say they would save on other costs to be able to travel.

The figures come from Fifty5Blue, formerly Kantar Media, and were commissioned by the travel company TUI, which sends travelers to warmer destinations.

Restaurant and bar visits are the first expense respondents would cut in order to keep traveling to southern destinations, according to 21 percent of those surveyed. Among families with children, the share is 29 percent.

Clothing and shoes, as well as electronics and new gadgets, are also areas respondents would be willing to go without in order to take a vacation.

“The figures show that vacations hold a very special place in the Danes’ budgets,” said Mikkel Hansen, communications director at TUI Denmark. “If belts need to be tightened, it’s dinner out or a new phone that has to wait rather than the trip out into the world.”

Separately, 31 percent of respondents said they do not need to save in order to afford a vacation.

The survey also found that 51 percent plan a vacation outside the Nordic region within the next year. Among families with children, the figure is 65 percent.
