Joel Huiqui Rafa Márquez Mexico national team roster, Digi Mart USA News: Three Cruz Azul players are expected to be included in Mexico’s national team squad: Erik Lira, Jesús Chiquete Orozco and, the biggest surprise, Andrés Montaño. However, hours before the list was revealed, Cruz Azul coach Joel Huiqui addressed the subject during a press conference.
Huiqui spoke ahead of Saturday’s match against Tigres UANL at the Estadio Universitario in Nuevo León. When asked about the players called up, his remarks appeared to criticize national team coach Rafa Márquez for not including Charly Rodríguez, who was the notable absence.
“For me it would be great to receive confirmation of whether it is Charly, whether it is Erik, Montaño himself or Omar Campos,” Huiqui said when asked about the Cruz Azul players with the best chances of making Márquez’s list. On Montaño, he added: “I don’t know if it is official.
It is a possibility that still exists.”
Huiqui also discussed how players can earn selection for the national team. “The only way to be seen and called up to the Mexican national team is by performing well for your club,” he explained.
“The more minutes they have as starters or come on as substitutes, the more opportunities they will have to be watched by the Mexican national team coach.”
Cruz Azul’s goalkeeping situation has also drawn attention. Kevin Mier returned to the starting lineup in the club’s most recent match after Andrés Gudiño had been in goal in the three previous games.
Huiqui praised both goalkeepers, saying: “There is a very particular brotherhood, I share it and I envy it.” He credited Gudiño’s availability and his replacement of Mier during the Colombian’s injury, and he described Mier as a player with great experience despite his young age.
