According to the police control center, around 6:15 p.m.

a car entered the intersection near Pfingsgraben street against a red light.

The vehicle was traveling on Gladbacher Straße toward the city center when it collided with another car and crashed head-on into oncoming traffic that was waiting at the light. Police reported nine people injured, one of them seriously, based on the current status.

The occupants of the at-fault vehicle initially fled on foot, but police said they were located shortly afterward near the accident site. There are indications of alcohol consumption by at least one of the occupants, but it still needs to be determined whether that person was the driver.

Emergency crews from several vehicles were deployed to the scene for accident investigation and treatment of the injured, and a special traffic accident team was also called in. Aachener Straße was closed in both directions between the gas station near Liverpooler Allee and Pfingsgraben street, and the closure was still in effect at 7:30 p.m.

Drivers were able to bypass the site via Enscheder Straße.

At about 10:15 p.m., the fire department provided further information. The accident occurred in the immediate vicinity of Fire and Rescue Station II on Gladbacher Straße, and staff from the nearby station provided immediate first aid.

Due to the scale of the incident, additional units were alarmed, and the emergency keyword “MANV” (mass casualty incident) was triggered because of the high number of injured.

In total, ten people were treated medically and transported by emergency services to various hospitals. After rescue and treatment measures were completed, the Rheindahlen unit of the volunteer fire department assisted police with the accident investigation.

A drone requested from the information and communications group was no longer needed. Police are continuing their investigation.
