Phoenix Suns defense and desire problems after 132-119 loss to Portland Trail Blazers, Digi Mart USA News: The Phoenix Suns’ major shortcomings on defense and in effort make it nearly impossible to fight back when they fall behind in games. Diagnosing why the team isn’t winning is not difficult, and the problems extend beyond a single cause.
All of the Suns’ weaknesses were on display Wednesday night in a 132-119 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Suns, who have been dreadful defensively early in the season, allowed a season-high 132 points, a total that makes winning in the NBA very difficult.
Deni Avdija scored 21 points, below his season average, but added 12 assists. Many of those assists began with dribble penetration and simple kick-out passes to open 3-point shooters.
Phoenix had no answer for him on the perimeter, and once he collapsed the defense, no Suns player closed out effectively on shooters.
Portland’s shooters were ready to launch when the ball reached them, most notably Jrue Holiday, who made five three-pointers. Given the open looks the Blazers received, the Suns’ current approach appears to be hoping for a miss.
Outside of a competitive first quarter in which the Suns built a five-point lead, the desire was not evident. The Suns allowed 43 points in the second quarter, including a 24-9 Portland run that seized control of the game.
Once Phoenix falls behind, climbing back is unlikely because it is not getting enough stops.
Jalen Green had a difficult night, but he showed late-game offensive aggression with a series of drives in the fourth quarter. Although many fans want Green moved to the bench, Collin Gillespie has not yet shown this season that he deserves a starting role.
Luke Kennard played 14 minutes and 9 seconds without attempting a shot, which the columnist called unacceptable.
The columnist concluded that the Suns no longer resemble the team that found its footing and won a surprising 45 games last season. Instead, they look like the team many pundits expected a year ago, which he described as deeply concerning.
