Mexican Navy seizes more than one ton of cocaine off Chiapas and Oaxaca coasts, Digi Mart USA News (Pacific waters off Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico): Personnel from Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy (Marina), acting through the Mexican Navy in its coast guard role, seized more than one ton of suspected cocaine in two operations in Pacific Ocean waters off the coasts of Chiapas and Oaxaca. The action was described as a new blow against drug trafficking.
According to a report released by the Security Cabinet, one suspected lawbreaker was detained during the operations, and 32 packages containing approximately 1,149 kilograms of a substance with characteristics similar to cocaine were secured. The operations were the result of patrols and permanent maritime surveillance carried out by naval units in national waters.
In a first intervention, federal forces located 16 packages containing about 629 kilograms of suspected cocaine. In a second action in the same maritime region, another 16 packages with approximately 520 kilograms of the same substance were found.
Authorities said the final weight of the narcotic will be determined through the corresponding prosecutorial procedures once forensic analysis of the seized substance is completed. The detained person was placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the agency responsible for building the investigation files and determining his legal status.
The Security Cabinet said the seizure represents an estimated economic loss of 272 million 898 thousand 198 pesos for criminal organizations engaged in drug trafficking. It also reported that more than 97 tons of cocaine have been seized in maritime operations during the current federal administration, a figure that will rise once this latest seizure is officially incorporated into the national record.
Authorities stated that these actions are part of a permanent strategy to combat illicit activity on maritime routes used by criminal groups, through coordinated operations led by the Navy with support from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. The stated objective is to weaken the financial and operational capacity of criminal organizations and strengthen security and the rule of law in Mexican territorial waters.
