Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit clarification, Digi Mart USA News (Vatican City): Pope Leo XIV does not have a scheduled visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, after a statement about a possible stop at a shrine dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe caused confusion about a possible trip to Mexico. The report was based on information published by N+.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified that Montse Alvarado, the new prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, was referring to a parish in Casavalle, Uruguay, and not to the Mexican shrine. The confusion arose during a press briefing about the pope’s possible trips to Latin America, when Alvarado said the pontiff would visit Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Bruni explained that the Vatican’s clarification ruled out any confirmation that the pope would arrive in Mexico City. He also said this does not mean Leo XIV has ruled out traveling to Mexico or visiting the Guadalupan shrine.
The pope has expressed a desire to visit Mexico and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a site of special significance for millions of Catholics and one of the leading centers of Marian devotion in Latin America. Reports in recent days had also suggested the trip could take place toward the end of 2027.
However, inquiries by the publication with various Vatican sources indicate that no date or official program has been set for such a visit. The absence of a calendar or defined agenda means any reference to a papal trip to Mexico remains a possibility, not a formal decision announced by the Holy See.
The Basilica of Guadalupe, located in the Gustavo A. Madero borough of Mexico City, is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world and receives millions of pilgrims each year, particularly during the December 12 celebrations dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The Vatican’s clarification distinguishes between the event mentioned for Uruguay and the pope’s possible interest in visiting Mexico. As of now, a visit by Leo XIV to the country has not been officially confirmed.
