Oscar Jegou France rugby injury ahead of Fiji test, Digi Mart USA News: Bad news continues to mount for the France rugby team. Oscar Jegou was set to take a place on the bench against Fiji on Saturday evening at 9:10 p.m.
but has been forced to withdraw after sustaining a rib injury during Wednesday’s training session, prompting head coach Fabien Galthié to revise his plans just days before the Championnat des Nations fixture.
Galthié is already dealing with several withdrawals of important players, and the French coach is losing another option in his pack of forwards. Jegou was expected to play a particular role thanks to his versatility, which also allowed him to cover at center.
According to Midi Olympique, the Stade Rochelais flanker was injured during Wednesday’s collective session. The injury to his ribs prevents him from taking part in the match against Fiji.
Although he had been considered among the replacements, Jegou is now among the fourteen players who must be sent back to their clubs. The withdrawal represents an additional difficulty for the France coaching staff, which had planned to rely on his versatility to organize the bench.
Galthié and his assistants were reportedly considering a split of six forwards and only two backs on the bench. In that setup, Jegou was expected to play a hybrid role, able to step in at flanker but also cover the center position if needed.
His unavailability therefore forces the staff to consider another solution to maintain that balance.
This injury could open an opportunity for Esteban Capilla. The flanker from Aviron Bayonnais, who has never yet been selected for the France team, appears as a candidate to replace Jegou on the bench.
The two players previously played together at under-20 level.
Particularly mobile and comfortable with the ball in hand, Capilla has a profile that could meet the expectations of the French staff. His ability to operate in open space could also allow him to cover at center, as had been planned for Jegou.
He could thus keep the France bench at its planned configuration of six forwards and two backs.
With the Fiji match only days away, the French coach must therefore manage an additional absence. Jegou’s injury comes as several senior players have already been forced to withdraw from this international fixture.
The staff must now determine which player will replace the Rochelais flanker while meeting the tactical requirements planned for this match.
Esteban Capilla is one possibility, but his presence on the matchday sheet remains to be confirmed. For the Bayonnais player, a possible call-up among the replacements would represent the opportunity to earn his first selection with the France team.
