Alice Guy biopic series France Télévisions HBO Max, Digi Mart USA News: France Télévisions is expanding its series division through partnerships with streaming platforms, and its latest project, Alice, marks a third production following Zorro and the live-action adaptation of Lucky Luke developed with Disney+.
Alice is a six-episode drama of roughly forty-five minutes per episode, produced in collaboration with HBO Max. It focuses on a real-world figure, Alice Guy Blaché, who became the first female director of fiction films in cinema history at the end of the nineteenth century, directing La Fée aux Choux in 1896 for Gaumont.
Her career was brief but prolific, with more than a thousand productions in France and the United States. Her work was largely forgotten for decades and resurfaced in the 2010s thanks to researchers and filmmakers, including Pamela B.
Green, whose 2019 documentary Be Natural examined her hidden history.
The series, created by Tim Loane and Claire Lemaréchal, moves between Paris and New York to portray a woman who was an artist, feminist, wife, mother and bold entrepreneur. It follows her troubled romances, professional struggles and search for recognition.
Béréncie Bejo plays the title role. Thibaut Evrard plays Léon Gaumont, Oscar Lesage plays Herbert Blaché, her husband and professional partner, Irène Jacob plays Marie, Alice’s mother, and Yannick Choirat plays Charles Pathé, her rival and antagonist.
Co-directed by Virginie Verrier and Guillaume Lonergan, the production was shot last winter in Paris, Belgium, the Camargue and Canada. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be available on HBO Max starting December 4, with a France Télévisions channel broadcast planned for 2027.
Manuel Alduy and Morad Koufane of France Télévisions said the series aims to reveal the fascinating path of a filmmaker who was unjustly overlooked for more than a century. Guillaume Le Gros of HBO Max said the project reflects the company’s commitment to universal and inspiring stories told with local partners.
