Concanaco Says U.S. Election Result Is No Automatic Fix for Mexico Tariffs

Concanaco response to US midterm election results and USMCA review: The Mexican business confederation says the Democratic congressional victory should not be treated as an automatic solution to tariff threats or to the upcoming USMCA review, urging Mexico to enter talks with a clear national agenda and technical preparation.

Concanaco response to US midterm election results and USMCA review, Digi Mart USA News: Amid a new political scenario in the United States, marked by Democratic victories in both chambers of Congress, the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur) said the outcome should not be interpreted as an automatic solution to tariff threats or to the challenges tied to the upcoming review of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The business organization, led by Octavio de la Torre, urged Mexico to act with technical preparation, strategic vision and its own agenda that protects the country’s economic interests. It stressed that the shift in legislative power in the neighboring country creates a need to enter negotiating tables with solid proposals and clearly defined objectives.

“Mexico must arrive at and remain at every table with its own agenda, identify what the counterpart needs and build agreements that generate verifiable benefits for our economy. A political opportunity becomes an economic opportunity when there is preparation to seize it,” the confederation said.

For the Mexican business sector, it is a priority to intensify institutional dialogue with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, as well as federal authorities, business chambers and U.S. regional actors that share a common interest in certainty for investment, employment and trade dynamism.

Under this premise, the national strategy should highlight the shared costs created by uncertainty and the tangible benefits of a stable economic relationship, allowing differences to be anticipated and negotiations to be conducted more effectively.

Concanaco warned that, although multinational companies play a fundamental role in the Mexican economy, their particular interests cannot replace the needs of the country as a whole. It therefore demanded that family businesses and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) have a direct voice in setting priorities and access to the benefits of regional integration.
