Social Security 2027 COLA 3.6% raise and key retiree dates, Digi Mart USA News: The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, giving millions of Americans a larger monthly benefit. Several upcoming dates deserve the attention of anyone who relies on Social Security, and one deadline arrives well before the new year.
According to SSA’s October 14 announcement, nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% increase, with the average retired worker gaining about $75 per month. Before the higher payments arrive, beneficiaries will receive personalized notices, and some will need to take action to view them early.
Beneficiaries who want early online access to their personalized COLA notices should create a my Social Security account and enroll in paperless notices by November 18, 2026. Anyone who has already registered should confirm that paperless notices are selected rather than assuming the account qualifies automatically.
Missing the November 18 deadline will not affect eligibility for the increase, since the deadline concerns early online access to the notice rather than the COLA itself.
Beginning in late November, SSA expects to make personalized COLA notices available through the Message Center in eligible beneficiaries’ my Social Security accounts. The agency says online access can be as much as three weeks faster than a mailed notice, although some retirement and disability beneficiaries may see their notices in early December.
Beneficiaries can also select email or text alerts to learn when a new message is available.
Beneficiaries who have not enrolled in paperless notices will receive their personalized COLA notices during December 2026, with delivery dates varying by household. The one-page notice shows the updated benefit amount, relevant payment dates and applicable deductions.
SSA advises beneficiaries to wait until January before contacting the agency about a missing mailed COLA notice.
SSA confirmed that approximately 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive their first 2027 COLA-adjusted payment on December 31, 2026. Because January 1 is a federal holiday, the regular January SSI payment is issued at the end of the preceding December.
This is not an additional benefit, so recipients should budget accordingly. For 2027, the maximum federal SSI payment increases to $1,029 for an eligible individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple, although actual payments can be lower depending on income and other circumstances.
For most Social Security retirement beneficiaries, larger monthly payments begin in January 2027. SSA’s official COLA fact sheet estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will rise from $2,095 to $2,170, an increase of approximately $75.
Payment dates generally depend on birth date and benefit circumstances, so beneficiaries should check SSA’s payment schedule rather than assume everyone receives the raise on the same day.
Medicare beneficiaries should also note that the 3.6% increase applies to the Social Security benefit before deductions, and Medicare premiums are usually deducted automatically from monthly checks. A higher Medicare Part B premium could absorb part of the COLA.
Details about 2027 Medicare changes will be available through Medicare.gov, so beneficiaries should compare their new gross benefit and deductions before estimating how much extra money they will have.
No application is needed for the COLA, because the increase happens automatically for eligible beneficiaries. Reviewing the personalized notice, confirming the payment schedule and accounting for Medicare deductions can help beneficiaries start 2027 with a clearer picture of their income.
