Mexico initiative to keep AI out of weapons of mass destruction decisions, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): Mexico is promoting an international initiative to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) from making decisions related to the use of weapons of mass destruction, ensuring that such decisions remain under human control, according to Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez.

Speaking after participating in the 2026 International Banking Conference, Velasco said Mexico is taking part in several multilateral discussions about the risks associated with AI, particularly the possibility that these technologies could intervene in decisions about the use of such weapons. He said Mexico has led an initiative calling for humans, never AI, to make the final decision on the use of these weapons.

On the economic front, Velasco said Mexico is seeking to strengthen its participation in the development of AI and semiconductors, sectors linked to growth in electronics exports. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) show that exports of electrical and electronic equipment and devices rose 94.7 percent year over year in September.

Velasco acknowledged that Mexico still has limited participation in semiconductor production. He said the country is advancing in several stages of the value chain, particularly in motherboard manufacturing and in the assembly, testing and packaging of technology components.

He also referred to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s project to develop a supercomputer in Mexico, named Coatlicue, as part of efforts to strengthen national capabilities in AI and data processing. The project includes a public investment of six billion pesos and an execution period of 24 months beginning in January 2026.

“I hope that with these new strategies the government has, we will keep gaining ground in artificial intelligence and semiconductors,” Velasco said.
