Sheinbaum rejects political persecution claims in Inés Gómez Mont case, Digi Mart USA News (Florida, United States): President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo rejected claims that the detention of former television host Inés Gómez Mont in Florida has political motivations. She said the former host is facing an investigation into alleged financial crimes that began under previous administrations.

During her morning press conference on Tuesday, November 3, the president said there are grounds for the former host to answer to Mexican authorities after she allegedly received funds of illicit origin in her personal bank accounts. “It is a crime of what she committed; in her own personal accounts she received funds of illicit origin, and it is an investigation that has been going on for some time,” Sheinbaum said.

Sheinbaum said she hopes the extradition request will advance so that Gómez Mont can face the charges brought by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Mexico. Attorney General Ernestina Godoy reported that the former host has three active arrest warrants: one for her alleged involvement in organized crime and operations with funds of illicit origin, and two more for equated tax fraud.

According to the FGR’s investigation, Gómez Mont allegedly received funds from a scheme of diverting and triangulating public money through shell companies, linked to contracts worth approximately 2,450 million pesos.

The former host was detained on October 30 in Florida by U.S. immigration authorities.

The prosecutor’s office clarified that her detention is due to her immigration status and that, if she is deported to Mexico, the corresponding arrest warrants will be executed.

Sheinbaum reiterated that the case does not represent political persecution, but a judicial proceeding over alleged financial irregularities that must be clarified before the competent authorities.
