Franco Colapinto, USA News: Franco Colapinto experienced a drastic shift from celebration to disappointment at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez following the Mexican Grand Prix. After four consecutive races without scoring points—which included three retirements—the Argentine driver delivered a clean and strong performance to initially cross the finish line in eighth place after another solid start in the Formula 1 event.

However, the FIA later penalized the Alpine driver with a 10-second post-race time penalty and one penalty point on his superlicence for breaching Article B1.8.4a of the F1 Sporting Regulations. Stewards determined that he failed to reduce speed sufficiently through a sector under a single yellow flag near the end of the race. This adjustment pushed his final classification down to 15th place out of the 17 drivers who finished.

Telemetry Review and Alpine’s Defense

Franco Colapinto and his team presented telemetry and onboard photographic evidence during a stewards’ hearing to argue that he had complied with regulations requiring drivers to slow down and prepare to change direction. Despite the defense, the stewards examined the onboard camera footage and telemetry data, concluding that the speed reduction through the sector was inadequate.

This penalty marked the third time during the 2026 season that the Argentine driver has been sanctioned for the same infraction, following similar penalties in Barcelona in June and the Netherlands in late August. The sanction increased his total penalty points to five within a 12-month period, nearly halfway to the 12-point limit.

Race Summary and Final Standings

During the race, Franco Colapinto demonstrated strong pace off the starting grid, climbing four positions in the opening moments to overtake Lando Norris and teammate Pierre Gasly. He maintained a competitive position inside the top ten during the first half of the race, dropping to 13th following his pit stop on lap 35.

Following a race suspension caused by Valtteri Cadilla’s accident and subsequent restarts, the Alpine driver regained ninth position and climbed to eighth after another incident involving Oliver Lindblad and Oscar Piastri. Although he finished on track in the points, the post-race penalty left him in 15th position, ahead only of Sergio Pérez and Pierre Gasly, who received a separate 30-second stop-and-go penalty.
