Spain train collision, USA News: At least 39 people have been killed and dozens of others have been injured after two high-speed trains collided in Spain. The accident took place just after 9 a.m. (0800 GMT), when a Renfe and an Iryo train crashed, causing two Iryo wagons to derail, according to a government spokesperson for the Castilla La Mancha region.
The incident has prompted the immediate suspension of the rail line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region, state rail operator Adif confirmed on Wednesday. The operator noted in a post on X that traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail corridor was halted following a rear-end collision between the two passenger trains.
Local authorities mobilized emergency response efforts following the disaster. Manuel Galan, the mayor of Urda near the central city of Toledo, stated that emergency services asked him to prepare a local sports hall to accommodate individuals who were injured in the crash.
