Pollsters Warn of Historic Midterm Disaster for Trump and Republicans

Trump midterms disaster: Polling experts warn that Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity is dragging Republican candidates toward a severe defeat in the upcoming US midterm elections. Data modeling suggests Democrats have strong chances of claiming both the House of Representatives and the Senate amid voter concerns over the economy, tariffs, and foreign conflicts.

Trump midterms disaster, USA News (London): Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity is acting as a dead weight dragging Republican candidates toward a disastrous defeat in the US midterm elections, polling experts believe. Recent surveys indicate a shift toward the Democrats that could grant them a strong chance of claiming both the House and the Senate through a sweep of key battleground races.

Such an outcome would leave Trump facing an awkward conclusion to his presidency, saddled with a hostile Congress capable of thwarting parts of his agenda and launching investigations into his conduct. Data modeling from the site Race to the White House (RWH) assigns Democrats a 94 percent chance of taking the House of Representatives and a 76 percent chance of winning the Senate, while other forecasters maintain even more pessimistic views on Republican prospects.

The outlook is equally bleak at ground level. RWH projects Democrats to win at least six Senate seats currently held by Republicans, surpassing the four required to flip control of the upper chamber. While midterms notoriously challenge the party holding the presidency, Republicans face an even tougher battle due to Trump and his low approval ratings, according to Tim Malloy, a polling analyst at the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“We have a very unpopular president – in our polling he’s at 32 per cent approval, which is really abysmal,” Malloy stated, noting public concerns over fuel prices, family food costs, tariffs, the war with Iran, and the Jeffrey Epstein matter. Malloy believes Republican candidates nationwide will pay the political price.

“Generally, the midterms at this point in a second term are not good for any president. But I think this could go down as the worst midterms for any president ever,” Malloy said, adding that presidential unpopularity triggers a trickle-down effect impacting everyone from local judges to congressional and senate nominees.

Dr. Louis Bromfield, a political researcher at Swansea University and founder of the Horse Race Politics forecasting website, highlighted states like South Carolina, where solid Republican leads in seats held since the 1950s have evaporated. Bromfield noted that predictions of a Democratic “blue wave” are being revised upward to a “blue tsunami.”

Bromfield identified the war in Iran and its impact on US prices as the Republicans’ greatest vulnerability, exacerbated by Trump’s U-turn after campaigning to end Middle East conflicts. This dynamic is reportedly eroding Trump’s base support. Meanwhile, some Republican candidates, such as Susan Collins running in Maine, have distanced themselves from specific policies like tariffs on Canada, though analysts question whether this will insulate them from voter dissatisfaction.

Local contests also feature unique dynamics, including an Ohio gubernatorial race centering on Republican candidate Vivek Ramaswamy’s controversial ad and a bitter Michigan Senate race involving Democrat Abdul el-Sayed. While Republican messaging has attempted to frame Democrats as dangerous subversives, analysts observe little evidence that this strategy is resonating, with only about four percent of voters remaining undecided.

Despite the grim numbers, pollsters remain cautious about underestimating Republican support given past overperformances. Bromfield emphasized that writing off Trump entirely would be foolish, noting that while his past successes relied on running as an insurgent, he is now judged on his record in office.
