standing charges on gas bills, USA News (London): Chancellor John Healey is preparing to deliver his first fiscal statement on Budget day, with the Treasury confirming ahead of the speech that fixed daily fees on gas bills will be scrapped starting next year for roughly 23 million homes.
The mandatory charges function as a fixed daily fee added directly to customer bills regardless of the total amount of gas consumed. For a typical household, these recurring fees accumulate to approximately £108 per year.
Ahead of his appearance in the Commons at around 12.40pm—scheduled immediately following Prime Minister’s Questions—the Treasury announced that Chancellor John Healey will formally ask energy regulator Ofgem to remove standing charges in 2027 or as soon as possible after that date. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the Chancellor have spent months planning the fiscal package alongside wider financial arrangements for the year ahead.
