Andy Burnham, USA News (London): Andy Burnham’s radical voting reform plan risks the breakup of the United Kingdom, anti-independence campaigners have told GB News. The Prime Minister has announced a National Commission on Electoral Reform and committed to replacing Westminster’s first-past-the-post system with proportional representation in Labour’s next general election manifesto.

During his first party conference speech as leader, Mr Burnham invited opponents to work with the commission to ensure everyone’s voice is heard, adding that the country cannot succeed with ongoing political turbulence. However, critics argue that the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru will look to exploit one of the most significant changes to Britain’s electoral system in centuries while actively campaigning for independence.

Recently, Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, Wales’s First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill, and Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald met in Cardiff for a conference on self-determination. The nationalist leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding calling on Downing Street to prepare for, plan, and facilitate constitutional change in each jurisdiction.

Electoral Systems and Parliamentary Projections

Under a proportional representation system, analysis shows Labour would likely require support from smaller parties to reach the 326 seats needed to govern in the House of Commons. Ex-Welsh Tory leader Andrew RT Davies stated that election outcomes under PR are determined behind closed doors with extreme groups wielding disproportionate power.

Analysis by Devolved Election Projections revealed different forms of PR would return varying seat totals based on Nowcast polling. Under the Additional Members System, Labour would win 196 seats, while a List PR system would result in 233 seats, both falling short of a parliamentary majority.

Political Reactions and Future Outlook

Ex-Scottish Minister John Lamont warned that PR produces weaker governments that fail to provide clear winners. Conversely, Eoghan Kelly from the Mile End Institute argued that current arrangements manufacture governments without full population support and that coalitions do not automatically equal instability.

Meanwhile, No10 recently invited Bute House to work on deeper devolution, though Mr Swinney insisted he intends to hold another referendum by 2031. Mr Burnham previously stated a united Britain remains better equipped to face rising global tensions through collaboration.
