Mexico Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco at XXX Ibero-American Summit, Digi Mart USA News (Madrid, Spain): Speaking on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexican Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez addressed the plenary session of the XXX Ibero-American Summit of heads of state and government, attended by high-level representatives of 22 countries. The meeting was presided over by King Felipe VI of Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and Ibero-American Secretary General Andrés Allamand.

Velasco conveyed the president’s fraternal greetings and outlined three principles guiding Mexico’s actions: caring for our people, opening opportunities for young people, and confronting together challenges no country can solve alone. He said that for Mexico, well-being is the purpose of growth, and that inequality can be reduced through state decisions.

He stated that the country places people at the center of public action, noting that an economy is valued for the well-being it generates and that there will be no shared prosperity while part of our peoples are left behind. “That is the principle that animates this Summit: serving people through collaboration,” he said.

Velasco said collaboration also guides Mexico’s foreign policy, which remains open to dialogue. On security, he said Mexico maintains relations with all nations based on four principles: respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity; shared and differentiated responsibility; mutual respect and trust; and cooperation without subordination.

“On that basis we engage firmly and work together to achieve concrete results,” he said.

Velasco also highlighted the close relationship between Mexico and Spain. He recalled that in 1939 President Lázaro Cárdenas opened the country’s doors to thousands of Spanish men and women seeking refuge, including scientists, teachers, artists and workers who enriched Mexican universities, science and culture.

“Yesterday’s hospitality is today’s friendship,” he added.

Velasco’s participation in Madrid confirms Mexico’s Ibero-American vocation. Together with Spain and Brazil, Mexico helped launch the Ibero-American Conference 35 years ago in Guadalajara.

Agreements reached on care, academic mobility, civil protection and artificial intelligence, he said, advance this mechanism of political dialogue and cooperation among 22 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries toward concrete results for their peoples.
