Pope Leo XIV Mexico visit, Digi Mart USA News: Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni has clarified that Pope Leo XIV has not confirmed any visit to Mexico in the coming months, according to a report from diario21.com.mx.
The clarification followed press reports that assumed Robert Francis Prevost would visit the Basilica of Guadalupe during his upcoming trip to South America. Bruni told reporters that during the apostolic visit to Uruguay, which begins in a few days, the pope will visit the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe, known as the Casavalle temple, but not the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico.
The Casavalle parish, located in Montevideo, Uruguay, is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The assumptions that the pope would be in Mexico arose during a press conference presenting the full schedule of his pastoral visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, scheduled for November 6 to 17.
The confusion stemmed from a misinterpretation of comments by María Monserrat Alvarado, prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, who said Leo XIV would visit the temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Bruni later clarified that she was referring to the Casavalle parish.
No date has been set for a Mexico visit. Since the early months of his pontificate, Leo XIV has expressed a desire to visit Mexico and the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, but numerous commitments have prevented him from setting a date.
He has said he hopes to soon see the original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, noting he was ordained a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, on December 12, 2014.
Questions about when the pope might travel to Mexico are expected to be clarified in coming months, once the Vatican publishes its schedule for early 2027. Papal agendas are typically released monthly and describe both Vatican activities and pastoral trips abroad.
Several Mexican Church leaders and pastors have suggested a possible visit could take place in the second half of next year.
